I purchased this car on
e-bay in August '06 from a gentlemen in Tennessee for $3500. The overall
condition of the vehicle was poor/barely running when I bought it. The
exterior color was Dunkelblau with a dark blue interior. The console and
dash were originally covered in blue leather. I spent the next year
restoring this vehicle. It passed MD safety inspection in September '07.
This was a substantial undertaking. The following tasks were done.
1. complete removal of the interior
2. removal of all exterior trim and body panels including driver's
quarter and partial passenger side rocker panel, removed all glass as well
3. completely strip all paint from the vehicle exterior as well as door
jambs
4. weld in replacement quarter panel and rocker panel, weld in partial
floor board on driver's and passenger's sides of vehicle
5. deleted rub strips
6. replaced hatch with rust-free hatch from '83 model car and replaced
the rear bumper cover with one from '83 vehicle as well
7. Refinished entire vehicle with Glasurit 55-line. Color is now
Venetian Blue (or Veneziablau.) This is a 1987 Porsche color which can
now be identified as paint code "L36P."
8. repaired countless electrical gremlins on vehicle and replaced the
rear section of the wiring harness.
9. replaced complete interior with interior from a wrecked '87 S4. It is
a 2-tone interior. The colors are marble gray and black.
10. replaced original instrument cluster with cluster from '87 S4. Also
repaired the broken odometer.
11. Performed all engine maintenance including replacing the timing
belt/water pump and all associated parts.
12. Replaced fuel injectors with newer design units from Ford Racing also
replaced most other underhood components of the fuel injection system.
13. Refreshed all intake gaskets, o-rings, seals, etc.
14. replaced malfunctioning LH control unit
15. recharged A/C
16. upgraded standard headlights to Hella 7" H4 lights.
17. replaced shocks, tie-rod assemblies, lower ball joints, rebuilt upper
ball joints, and installed new wheel bearings all around.
18. replaced stock '85 spindles with spindles from '81 car and did S4 big
brake upgrade at all 4 corners.
19. added 6mm front wheel spacers to allow 16X7 manhole covers to clear
the larger brakes.
20. Alignment.
This is the gist of what I've done so far, countless details have been
left out but for all practical purposes it's no wonder it took a year+ to
do this. I have driven the car almost daily for two months now without
any major issues or breakdowns and have logged about 4000 miles so far.
The exterior isn't perfect but it was my first crack at bodywork and
painting. I'd give it a 7 for the exterior. The engine and drivetrain at
this point would rate a solid 9 for performance and reliability. It's
safe to say at this point this one is saved.
