It has been driven daily for the past three years, and is generally in good shape. This car needs an owner that likes to tinker and maintain it. The current owner, a good friend and neighbor of mine, has decided to move on to other projects rather than put additional $$ into it. The car drives very well and feels extremely solid. It has some cosmetic and engine issues (see below), thus the low starting bid, however the unique color and license plates make this a very special 928. DETAILS: The 928 features a large, front-mounted and water-cooled, V8 engine displacing 4.5 L and featuring a single overhead camshaft, producing 219 hp. They also utilize a unique transaxle design to help achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance. Thus the 928 is regarded as a more relaxing Porsche to drive. This one comes with a five-speed "dog leg" manual transmission, somewhat rare since a majority of the 928's were delivered with automatic transmission. The body, styled by Wolfgang Möbius under guidance of Anatole Lapine, is mainly steel, but the doors, front fenders and hood are aluminum. The new polyurethane elastic bumpers were integrated into the nose and tail and covered in body-colored plastic; an unusual feature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag. The 928 qualifies as a 4-seater having two small seats in the rear, but these seldom used rear seats fold down to dramatically enlarge the luggage area, giving it an amazing amount of cargo space. Interestingly, both the front and rear seats feature sun visors for the riders. The 928 was also the first vehicle in which the instruments move up and down along with the adjustable steering wheel. This 928 includes other innovations such as the "Weissach Axle", an early all-wheel steering system that provides passive rear-wheel steering in certain off-throttle cornering situations, and an unsleeved, silicon alloy engine block made of aluminum, which reduces its weight and provides a highly durable cylinder bore. Also, the1979 model was one of the best for reliability as it had the least amount of complicated systems, on this model year if the timing belt fails there's no valve damage, on newer models it can be catastrophic. "Slime" (as it is affectionately called) does have the factory spare tire and 12v air compressor in the back. It also has factory spare plugs, belts, jack, etc. that came standard with this vehicle. The Air Conditioning blows ice cold. Included as well in the glove box is the owner's manual and a new bottle of green leather polish. SPECIFICATIONS (as published): - Manufacture: August 1979 - VIN # is 9289202101 (No title report since car is pre-1981) - Model designation: 928 - Engine displacement: 4.5 L - Miles: 78,000 - Valves: 16 - mechanical fuel injection - Power: 219 hp (163 kW) North America (177 kW) - Fuel economy: a surprising 22 mpg/fwy (the engine was considered an acceptable compromise of performance and fuel economy right after the energy crisis.) - VEHICLE HISTORY: - The car sat in original owner's garage and was rarely driven for many years and was purchased by present (second) owner with 23,000 miles. Since that time, well over $15,000.00 has been invested in the car: - leather on dash replaced, also new glove box and some seat panels. (There are no cracks in the dash) - windshield and mirror - radiator, cooling hoses - all wiring in engine compartment - muffler, water pump, timing chain, generator, engine mud guard, etc., etc. KNOWN ISSUES: - Oil leak. This is the most major current issue as this dripper can smoke pretty bad when the oil hits the exhaust manifold below. It could be a cracked block or merely a head gasket. My mechanic couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from and the present owner is moving on to other projects. - Paint is wearing through on left front fender - Ding on right front bumper (see photo) - Dent left rear quarter panel. (see photo) - Right armrest needs two screws - Hood release needs repair/reinstall parts come w/car - Heat control plastic switch broken/needs glue and adjustment/s - Right under-dash shelf needs a few screws - CD/radio currently wired to ignition so memory is lost each time the car is turned off - Some peeling of clear overcoat on right rear bumper - not unsightly except when looking up close. - Cracked/broken driver's electric seat controls (no lumbar and up/down controls). They are also catching somewhat on the e-brake. - Some scuffing on the back of the left drivers and rear seats (see photo) - Leather around steering wheel needs to be resewn at bottom.
