I purchased this car four years ago from the family of an older widowed woman, who was selling some of her husband's possessions, which included this Porsche 928. It had 98,000 miles on it and both the odometer and the speedometer worked. However, it had been in storage for several years without being driven, which was hard on the Porsche engine. Initially I drove it, but it had various problems with vacuum leaks and certain items functioning only part of the time without any rhyme or reason. I took it to a certified Porsche shop and after several days and a very expensive bill, I was assured it should work better, although they warned me that the long storage period had dried up most of the seals, hoses, belts, etc. I again drove it for several weeks, but began to have many of the same problems. After a second visit to the Porsche shop and another large bill, I was advised that the engine should be overhauled and that if I wanted it done thoroughly and up to factory specs (rings, pistons, bearings, etc), that it would run about $10,000! Because of the outrageously high price, I began to look for other options and came across a company that has a long and successful record of putting Chevy V-8 engines into Porsches of all kinds. I contacted Renegade Hybrids (www.renegadehybrids.com) and purchased a kit to install and bolt in the Chevy motor. I had a local company build a race-prepped and bored 400 CID small block Chevy motor and place it in the Porsche. I also had custom headers manufactured by a local specialty exhaust shop. Although I have not had the opportunity to have the Chevy motor on the dyno, the builders assure me that it will make a little over 400 horsepower, as they use this same engine in some of the race cars they build. My limited experience with this car does reveal that it has enormous power, especially when compared with a stock 928. This engine configuration weighs 15 lbs less than the stock 928 motor, yet has a substantial increase in horsepower, (ie: 245 HP for the stock 928). Furthermore, the longterm savings will also be substantial, as the Chevy parts are readily available and quite cheap compared with the Porsche parts (ie: 928 water pump costs over $300). I have gotten to use the car very little since I got it back with the Chevy engine in it, as I have been in college and now have 4 children as well as a very busy schedule. I have kept it licensed and try to take it for a drive several times during the summer months. It is stored in the garage and occasionally, does get started and ran for 5 minutes during the winter months. I have tried to finish restoring the car both in and out, but have found little time to do so, nor do I forsee myself having the time for many years. I'm currently selling it for far, far less than I have invested and hope another 928 enthusiast will finish it and give it the care it needs. I have purchased parts from 928 International (www.928intl.com) and Devek 928 (www.devek.net) and have found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable; both are US companies that deal strictly in 928 parts and service and sell both used and new parts. The engine runs very well and is currently carbureted, has custom aluminum valve covers with the original, PORSCHE valve cover wording, bonded to them. It has cast iron Sportsman 2 heads, a performance cam, an Edelbrock intake manifold and water pump, as well as countless other performance engine parts. The engine has less than 1,000 miles on it since placement in the car. The clutch is a new high performance Chevy Corvette unit that has the Porsche internal spline, which is mated to the drive shaft within the torque tube, as in standard 928 fashion. The 5 spd transaxle works excellent; (Devek has tested the 928 manual transaxle up to 600 ft-lbs of torque, without problem!). The exhaust only includes custom headers, as I have not had the time to get the exhaust finished to the rear yet. My plan was to join the exhaust into one 3" center pipe and then split the exhaust again into 2 Borla high performance mufflers and then exit out the back. The car is currently quite loud, but is the perfect starting point if one wanted to install a racing exhaust system. Additional future plans included having the rear wheel wells rolled and installing 18" rims and wide, low profile tires; Devek has entire wheel and tire fitments for the 928 at excellent prices. I also planned to finish restoring the interior (beige leather) and it still needs both interior door panels, although I do have the full-length arm rests for each door. The instrument circuit board also needs replaced, and both Devek and 928 Intl have used and new in stock and are happy to explain how this is done. The tires that are currenlty on the car still have a lot of wear left; they are high performance aqua treads. The windshield has one low crack that is not in the line of sight for driving, but in the interest of full restoration should be replaced. The car has also been lowered, handles exceptionally well, and is really fun to drive. The aluminum body is in excellent shape and does not need any major items replaced ( a used hood goes for $700). The car is factory black, but has most likely been repainted, since it shows less wear than one would expect for being a 1979 model. The exterior has not been modified in any way, so the car appears to be only a stock 928 and is really a 'sleeper'. This car is really quite the steal, as the engine alone is worth over $3000 dollars, the Chevy V-8 adaptor kit is worth over $2000, and the car body alone is worth the asking price; these values do not reflect any labor, only parts. Serious buyers only, are invited to call (701) 852-4725 for further information and/or for more pictures, or to schedule a test drive; leave a message and phone number if you do not get an answer. Buyer will pay all shipping charges. This vehicle is sold as is and sale is final, there is no warranty supplied with this vehicle.
